Why Alcohol and does it work? The active ingredient in hand sanitizer (usually alcohol) disrupts the coating of virus and bacteria particles, breaks down the germs' cell wall and causes them to die.  Do alcohol based hand sanitizers lead to resistant bacteria? Laboratory testing has never shown alcohol-based hand sanitizers lead to bacteria resistance or that organisms adapt and become immune to alcohol based hand sanitizers.
